History of the Sacred Valley

During the 15th century, the Inca ruler Pachacutec forged a vast empire in South America, stretching from what is now southern Colombia to central Chile, covering much of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, and northern Argentina. This formidable empire, known as the "Tahuantinsuyo" or "Empire of the Four Quarters of the World," extended over 4,000 kilometers from north to south and was interconnected by an impressive road network that reached 40,000 kilometers in length.

The epicenter of this empire was in the Andean region of Peru, more than 3,000 meters above sea level, in the city of Cusco. This metropolis, considered the capital and court of the Incas, was located in an area of great strategic and cultural significance: the Sacred Valley. This fertile territory, traversed by the Vilcanota-Urubamba River, stood out for its extraordinary agricultural wealth and the majestic Inca fortresses. Likewise, this river originates in the glaciers of the Vilcanota mountain range and takes the name Urubamba as it descends towards the Amazonian jungles. On its journey, it connects two of the mountains most revered by the Incas: Ausangate and Salkantay.

The river's flow is fed by the waters coming from the melting of the peak of the mountain “Veronica”, considered the "wife" of Salkantay. On a promontory surrounded by the Urubamba River and connected to Salkantay, the Incas built the impressive ceremonial citadel of Machu Picchu. This place was not only a royal residence of the first emperors but also an important spiritual center dedicated to the worship of the sacred mountains that surround it.

Main attractions of the Sacred Valley

1.- Pisac

Famous for its handicraft market and archaeological complex, Pisac has Inca agricultural terraces, temples and a necropolis that make it a must-see destination. Its market is ideal for buying textiles, jewelry and ceramics made by local artisans.

2.- Ollantaytambo

One of the best places to visit in the whole of the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo holds both the most original, and the best-preserved Inca, and pre-Inca ruins in all Peru. There’s not just one or two of these buildings, many of the buildings date back this far, meaning that the town has come to be known as “the Living Inca City”. You can also head up the hillside and visit the Inca fortress, it is truly a sight that will take your breath away.

3.- Chinchero

Known for its colonial church and its textile tradition, Chinchero is a place where you can see demonstrations of ancestral weavings and enjoy a panoramic view of the valley. The church of Chinchero, built on an Inca base, is an example of the fusion between indigenous and colonial cultures.

4.- Moray

This archaeological site stands out for its concentric circular terraces, which the Incas used as an agricultural laboratory to experiment with different microclimates. It is believed that each level of the terraces generated a different temperature, allowing the cultivation of different types of crops.

5.- Salt mines of Maras

6.- Urubamba

High up in the fertile valleys, Urubamba was also used for food production, even today being famous for its fruit. There are many indigenous communities to be found here still, and the town proudly boasts the name “La Perla del Vilcanota” or “The Pearl of Vilcanota”, all thanks to the jaw-dropping scenery that surrounds it.
