What is the Short Inca Trail?

The Short Inca Trail is a 2-day, 1-night hike that covers part of the famous Classic Inca Trail leading to the majestic Machu Picchu. This trek is designed for those who wish to experience the magic of the Inca Trail without committing to the longer 4-day trek. It is the only alternative trek that allows you to reach Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Short Inca Trail Difficulty

The Short Inca Trail is rated as MODERATE. The highest altitude reached is 2,720m (8,923 ft) at the Sun Gate. While easier than the Classic Trail, it includes steep Inca stairs, particularly near Wiñay Wayna.

  • Steep Steps: The section leading up to Wiñay Wayna involves steep, original Inca stone steps ("Monkey Steps").
  • Humidity: As you enter the cloud forest, it can get warm and humid.
  • Altitude: Although lower than Cusco, hiking at 2,700m can still affect breathing.
  • Distance The total hiking distance is 10.37 kilometers (6.3 miles). The hike typically takes 6 to 7 hours, depending on your pace and stops for photos.
Recommendation: We suggest spending at least 2 days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to acclimatize before starting this trek.

Packing List for the 2-Day Trek

The two-day hike involves one day of hiking to meet the last part of the Inca Trail followed by a late afternoon arrival at Machu Picchu. It’s a lot of walking but achievable with an average fitness level.

  • If possible, practice hiking on uneven trails.
  • Spend at least one or two days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the hike to acclimatize to the altitude.
  • Stay hydrated and avoid heavy meals and alcohol before the hike.

What to Pack for the Short Inca Trail

Since this is a short hike with accommodation in a hotel in Aguas Calientes, you will only need the essentials. A small backpack (20-25 liters) is usually sufficient.

  • passport (important)
  • hiking boots
  • waterproof jacket or poncho - rain can happen unexpectedly
  • breathable and comfortable pants and shirts (long ones will help against mosquitos)
  • sunscreen (min SPF35) and sunglasses
  • insect repellent
  • Reusable water bottle (1–2L)
  • toilet paper (any toilet paper used on the trail needs to go with you and be properly disposed of at the end of the hike)

Additional Notes

If you have an additional suitcase, you can send it by train to Aguas Calientes. It will be waiting for you at your hotel upon arrival.

Meals on the Trail
  • A box lunch (or packed lunch) will be provided by the company, and each traveler will carry their own.
  • There are no restaurants along the Inca Trail, and lunch is eaten at the archaeological site of Wiñayhuayna.
