Why Are Machu Picchu Tickets Limited?
To protect this World Heritage Site, Peru's Ministry of Culture has set a strict limit on the number of daily visitors. Unlike other monuments around the world, Machu Picchu does not sell unlimited tickets.
Once the daily quota for a specific date is reached, the system closes. There are no exceptions, not even for travel agencies. If you are traveling during the high season (April to October), it is common for tickets to sell out 2 or 4 months in advance.
Not all tickets are created equal: The importance of Circuits
Since recent updates to the regulations, visits to the Llaqta (citadel) are divided into different circuits. This is perhaps the most critical point to book in advance:
Circuit 2 (Classic Route): This is the most sought-after circuit. It allows you to take the classic postcard photo from the Guardian's House and complete the entire tour of the urban area. This ticket is the first to sell out.
Mountains (Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain): If you want to do extra hiking, the quotas are even smaller (only a few hundred per day).
If you wait until the last minute, you will likely only find availability for partial circuits or the lower part, missing out on the iconic panoramic view.

Important: Each tourist ticket is unique and non-transferable, so it is essential to correctly enter the first name, last name, and ID or passport number of each visitor.
Train logistics
Buying your ticket to the citadel is only half the equation. You must synchronize your entry time with your train tickets (Perurail or Inca Rail).
Key fact: the most convenient train times (early in the morning) fill up quickly. Booking your ticket to Machu Picchu in advance also allows you to secure the train that best suits your itinerary, avoiding an unnecessary overnight stay in Aguas Calientes if you don't want one.
Avoid lines and last-minute scams.
Some time ago, limited ticket sales were made available in person in the town of Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes) for the following day. However, relying on this is extremely risky:
- It involves standing in huge lines from the early hours of the morning (sometimes from 3:00 AM).
- It does not guarantee that you will get the tour you want.
- It takes away valuable time from enjoying your vacation.
Having your reservation confirmed digitally gives you the peace of mind to arrive, get on the bus, and enjoy yourself without stress.
Best prices on flights and accommodation
Once you have secured your entry date to Machu Picchu (which is the “cornerstone” of your trip), you can book flights and hotels further in advance. This usually translates into better rates and access to the best rooms with views and the best hotels.
Machu Picchu is a destination that requires strategy. Don't let lack of availability ruin your dream trip.
Our recommendation: If you plan to travel between May and August, book at least 3 to 5 months in advance. For the rest of the year, 2 months is prudent to secure Circuit 2.
Hike the Inca Trail for 2 days. Visit Machu Picchu for 2 days.
