Permits and Availability for the Inca Trail: How It Works

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most famous trekking routes in the world. Every year, thousands of travelers dream of hiking its ancient trails, exploring unique archaeological sites and culminating the journey in the imposing citadel of Machu Picchu. But to achieve this, there is a key detail that you cannot overlook: the Inca Trail permits.

Why are permits required for the Inca Trail?

The Inca Trail is part of the World Heritage of Humanity, protected by the Peruvian State and UNESCO. To conserve its structures, minimize environmental impact and control the number of visitors, the government established strict regulations:

  • Only 500 people per day can enter the Inca Trail (including tourists, guides, porters and support staff).
  • This guarantees a safer and more authentic experience and protects the Andean ecosyste

Who issues the permits?

Inca Trail permits are managed exclusively by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. Only authorized tourism agencies can access this platform and make the reservation on behalf of the traveler.

It is not possible to obtain a permit on your own.

When are reservations open?

Permits for each year are usually available starting in October or November of the previous year. For example, permits for 2026 will be available from the end of 2025. However, exact dates may vary, so it is critical to watch for official announcements.

Why book in advance?

Due to high demand, especially in high season (May to September), permits sell out quickly, sometimes in a matter of days. If you dream of doing the Inca Trail, reserve your quota at least 6 to 8 months before your desired date.

What information is needed to make a reservation?

At the time of applying for your permit, you will need to provide:

  • Name and surname (the same as on the passport)
  • Passport number
  • Nationality
  • Date of birth
  • Exact start date of the trip

⚠️ It is important that the data match exactly those in your valid passport. Any error may invalidate the permit.

Can the date of the permit be changed?

No. Once the permit is issued, the date, name and passport number cannot be changed. Nor can it be transferred to another person. In case of cancellation, there is no refund.

Does it include entrance to Machu Picchu?

Yes. The Inca Trail permit includes:

  • Access to the Inca Trail for 4 days and 3 nights.
  • Entrance to Machu Picchu on the last day.
  • Entrance to the archaeological sites along the trail (Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, Wiñay Wayna)

Reserve early to secure your place on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Limited availability.

To check permit availability, you can visit the official website of the Ministry of Culture of Peru or consult with your chosen tour operator. Many operators also provide real-time availability on their websites.

If the 4-day Inca Trail is sold out, the 2 day Inca Trail (1 day hike + Machu Picchu next day) is the best alternative.

Alternative Trekking Routes

If permits for the classic Inca Trail are sold out, consider alternative trekking routes to Machu Picchu. The Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, and Inca Jungle Trek offer diverse and equally stunning experiences. These routes do not require permits and are less crowded.

Final Tips

  • Book Early: Secure your spot by booking as early as possible.
  • Be Flexible: If your preferred dates are unavailable, consider alternative dates or trekking routes.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with any changes in regulations or permit availability.

Embarking on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. By understanding the permit system and planning ahead, you can ensure a smooth and unforgettable journey through this historical and natural wonder.
